This
coming August, Harrogate and The Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League
will play host to 36 "Golden Oldie", (over forty), overseas teams
from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South
Africa. In addition some of the best known touring teams from
the south of England will be taking part.
Teams
will play on some of the most
picturesque grounds that the Harrogate area has to offer and
Spofforth CC have applied to have matches played at our ground.
Each participating ground will be asked to host three fixtures
throughout the festival week. These will take place Monday
9th, Wednesday 11th and Friday 13th August, 2010. The matches
will be 35 over friendly matches, commencing at 11.00am. The
fixture list for the festival will be drawn up nearer the time once
a final list of registered teams is available.
The
standard of cricket played will vary: it is quite likely that a few
former first class cricketers and one or two test players will be
appearing. Ray Illingworth ex of Yorkshire and England who
played first class cricket when he was 50 will be the Festival
Ambassador and will make appearances at some of the games hosted.
Several ex professionals will be playing, and some teams will be
very useful. Others will be enthusiastic but not very good.
The ethos of the festival is that everyone who participates enjoys
themselves and whilst there will be an element of competition
between the sides, every match will be played in the spirit of
friendship and sport.
Spofforth CC invites players past and present (over 40) who would be
interested in forming a team to play in the festival and are
available on the above dates to contact
Nigel Kenyon by email or on
07955040011.
