Spofforth
CC played host in August to three fantastic cricket matches as part
of this year's Golden Oldie Tournament. In what was a week of
distinctly average English summer weather three Australian Teams
bought with them comradeship, fun and friendship that more than made
up for the weather and we are delighted to have played a part.
Glen Iris Geldings, a team of ex grade Cricketers from Melbourne, won the toss and elected to field for
the 40 overs a side match. The weather could have been a lot
better, but even though the players had to leave the field for rain
6 times the match was very entertaining !!
All eleven of the Spofforth players got off the mark [ honest ] and
with Adrian Cox top scoring with 58 and Mark Abram 20 we managed to
put on 164 - 9.
In return Glen Iris knocked off the winning runs in the 38th over
with all of their players scoring well. Mark Woodward was the
best Spofforth bowler with figures of 6-1-18-2
Aus - 1, Spofforth - 0
Game two was another team from Australia, Gold Coast Cricket Society
from Queensland, These Gentlemen were slightly older than the
Glen Inis players !
All over 55 but under 83 Gold Coast were the most entertaining team
you could ever wish to meet. From the moment they arrived to
the time they left, on the field and off , everyone in the ground
was either laughing or crying, laughing at the stories and comments
they were telling. Even though one of them had to be taken to
Hospital for stitches in his hand, he was adamant that he would be
back for a few beers, and with one hour to go before they had to
leave , he came back and managed a few, 6 or 7 pints,!!
That game saw our guests score 165 - 13 well they all turned up so
we told them all to play. This was the first time that I have
witnessed Spofforth win by 13 wickets. All our batsmen retired
at 25 and even then our guests, sorry now our friends, had a great
day's cricket.
Aus - 1, Spofforth - 1
The
third and final game, against Trinity Tigers was a little more
competitive, with all their players under 55 this time. The
Tigers scored 166. Spofforth knocked off the winning runs with
a boundry from Andy Percy. 40 not out and Steve Ward 38 not out saw
Spofforth win the match and the series!!

Aus - 1 , Spofforth - 2
I would like to thank
everybody who made this event at the club the success it was, all
the players, tea girls, scorer, groundsmen, umpires, also Ian for
the BBQ'S, the cleaners and Terry for the bar and every thing else
he did behind the scenes.
