We
know, from records in the village, that
Cricket has been played in Spofforth
since at least 1854 and it is likely
therefore that our club is one of the
oldest in the area.
The
club was a founder member of the
Wetherby League just after the end of
the First World War and after a short
spell in the Harrogate League returned
to the Wetherby League in the mid to
late 1950's. For the first few years the
club survived in the lower divisions
before winning the 2nd division
championship in 1961 and has remained in
the first division since that time. No
other present club has a longer unbroken
run in the top division.
The
late 1960s to the early 1980s were a
golden age for the Club with the League
Championship being won on no fewer than
9 occasions as well as numerous cup
competitions. In 1973 the club went
through the season unbeaten winning the
League Championship and both Senior Cup
competitions, a feat which we believe is
unique in the League.
To
see faces and teams from the past why
not drop into the Clubhouse anytime
during the season, you may well
recognise some of the faces on display.
If you have anything to add to the
history of the Club then please let us
know and we'll be more than happy to add
it to these pages.
